Who are we:
The Adults with Disabilities Assisted Physical Training (ADAPT) Program is a one-on-one fitness program for individuals with disabilities at the Pulse. ADAPT pairs clients with student volunteers who will provide assistance with workouts suited to the client's unique needs. The program was designed to make the gym more accessible and reduce any barriers that one may face.
Mission:
The mission of our program is to promote the physical and mental well-being of persons with disabilities by providing them with personalized support and guidance from trained student volunteers.
We understand that there may be a barrier for people with disabilities to start and stay physically active. We would like to eliminate this by helping our clients find creative ways to overcome and adapt to these barriers in the gym. Our volunteers can assist with this by being there as support for clients as they go through their workout routine and help them to reach goals.
Values:
1.Inclusivity: We believe that everyone should have the opportunity to lead healthy and active lives, regardless of their abilities or challenges.
2.Empowerment: We strive to empower persons with disabilities to take control of their own health and fitness goals.
3.Compassion: We are committed to treating all of our clients with kindness, understanding, and respect.
4.Responsibility: We take our role in supporting the health and well-being of our clients seriously, and we hold ourselves and our volunteers to the highest standards of accountability and professionalism.
5.Growth: We are committed to continuously learning and improving, both as individuals and as an organization, in order to provide the best possible support to our clients.
Who is eligible to participate in this program?
Any McMaster student or community member with a Pulse membership who has a disability may apply to this program. Your assigned volunteer is just there to help you through your workouts in whatever capacity you would like or require. Please note that volunteers are not personal trainers and therefore are not able to assist in a trainer capacity. For inquiries or to get started in the program, please contact adapt@mcmaster.ca
