His teammates are ALL honoured to be on the same playing field with him. Omar sums up Sam’s passion, noting, “Not only was he just involved and part of the teams, but he was also arguably one of the best performers in every team he played in. He also demonstrated excellent sportsmanship and always made the opponent team smile as well as his own team.”
His teammate Hannah, raves,
“Sam is an incredibly dedicated athlete, despite having a boatload of prior commitments including extracurricular student experience activities and maintaining his academics, he was able to commit to a number of teams and consistently show support for each one of them. In addition to his dedications and multitude of participation Sam also deserves to be recognized for the optimistic attitude he brought to every event. Her teammate, Florencia acclaims her team spirit,
“We formed a team with a group of exchange students that have all different backgrounds and experiences in sports. Anya guided us and pushed us to do this activity together and made us a team. While some of us never played before, and some had a bit of experience Anya encouraged us every step of the way and got us to practice and play with great energy. She has great skills with the Frisbee as well as being an amazing team player. She always made sure everyone got a fair amount of time, always cheered us on from the sidelines, and made every game win or lose an amazing time! And on top of that thanks to her support and initiative she got us to make 2nd in the league!”
Her teammate, Alice, enjoyed her experience noting,
“Anya organized our Frisbee team, as a group of exchange students who had never played Ultimate Frisbee before, she suggested it, ensured we all knew how to sign up and followed through with our sign ups, and hence was captain of our team. As captain she's been invaluable, showing up to all, and organizing some of, our casual practice sessions as well as calling out latent sexism and unfair substitution. Anya has been an amazing player in terms of skill and a great team-player, always coming off the pitch when her time was up etc and making sure to rally the troops before the match begins. She has helped our team, as just a bunch of exchanges who wanted something fun to do on a Tuesday evening and get involved in mac sport, bond and earn ourselves not only team of the week on one occasion, but second place in the league. I'm really proud of how far we've come (as newbies to the sport) under her leadership and hope to continue to play Ultimate Frisbee when back at my home institution - though it won't be the same without this team.”
Anya, we salute your leadership and superb organization skills, it’s our honour to have you as a McMaster Intramurals Athlete of the Year!

Kathlyne Nelson
Kathlyne Nelson has been a motivating and enthusiastic player and captain throughout her career at McMaster. Kathlyne's first Intramural Sports experience dates back to September 25, 2009 when she took to Ron Joyce Stadium and hopped, cheered, ducked, and rolled her way to a first place finish in our inaugural Extreme Potato Sack Race. Her love for sport, positive attitude and support of teammates, competitors and staff alike was clear from the start.
Not resting on her championship laurels, Kathlyne has participated on a total of 13 Intramural Sport teams since that fateful fall night, including Corec and Women's Outdoor Soccer, Innertube H2O-Polo, Dodgeball and Corec Indoor Soccer. Her undergraduate Intramural Sports career came to an end in Spring 2012 with a championship season in Corec 6's Volleyball (as a member of the famed Quantum Turkies, no less - shout outs to all the physicists amongst us).
Danielle Franciscus notes that Kathlyne's dedication, commitment, athletic skills and high energy levels make her an ideal team player and leader for Intramurals. Sohel Shivji
Sohel Shivji turned a team around, notes Sohail Mahmood, Floorball Convenor. "The team that Sohel joined had a history of problems with referees and other players," said Mahmood. "The sportsmanship needed improvement."
Enter Sohel. Through a supportive approach of his players, not only did he help shape this team into contenders, but into more inclusive players. "The transition from only one season was extraordinary," commented Mahmood. As their captain, Sohel worked hard every game and led by example.
Sohel's leadership was tested in the 2012 Floorball playoffs, culminating in the last two games of the season. In the first, a major turnover saw his teammates exchange heated words. As captain, Sohel intervened, reminding them of the spirit of the league and that this was not the time nor the place for that type of behaviour, after which his teammates apologized to each other. In the dying seconds, Sohel's team scored the game winner, sending the team on to the next round.
In the championship game, Sohel again led his team, and again, the team scored another game winner with just under 2 minutes remaining. He helped his team keep their composure after the goal and maintained respect for his opponents by not overcelebrating.
"He led handshakes in every game and was a pleasure to convene and officiate," said Mahmood. "An overall class act."

In February 2009 he began his first term as VP Athletics for the Society of Off Campus Students (SOCS). At the time SOCS had a history of forfeiting many games, frustrating teammates and opponents. He ran on the platform that he would not only stop the forfeits but increase fan support and get SOCS their first championship. Many doubted this was possible, but Dan was determined. Early in the 2009 season, he was sidelined by a knee injury. He swallowed his playing pride and found a new role on the sidelines captaining every game for every team. Under his leadership, SOCS didn't forfeit a single game, and even won three championships.
Matt Edmonds, Intramural Sports staff member, wholeheartedly supported Dan's nomination. "He is a good-spirited participant and sets a positive example for anyone playing with or against him," said Edmonds.
Bringing a diverse group of students together, Dan represents the energy and dedication captains invest in keeping us all playing. Without a doubt, we would not achieve what we do - sharing in fun, sweat and friendship - without leaders like Dan making it happen, setting a positive example for us all.

Dave Coate
Dave has been a spirited intramural athlete since his arrival on campus in 1st year. He approaches sport with a try your best, be respectful, fun-first mentality that our Intramural Sports program looks to recognize. Win or lose, Dave plays with integrity and hustle and demonstrates respect for opponents, teammates and staff.
This year alone, Dave has participated in nine intramural sports, and, as Convener Anthony Baatz states, he “throws himself into every minute he’s on the court, field, and wherever else he can find a place to play.” His athletic skill and versatility is evident through the number and variety of sports that he competes in: basketball, soccer, volleyball, flag football, squash, and softball.
Dave leads by example, and, as Sport Coordinator Chris Knechtel states, his “passionate yet friendly, helpful approach” to sports is contagious.
Dave’s dedication to our program has been outstanding! His enthusiasm and approach have truly helped to create a fun, inclusive environment throughout his time at McMaster.

Amanda Mulder
Amanda Mulder is a dedicated athlete who has participated in seven leagues and two tournaments this year. Whether playing volleyball, basketball, soccer, or ultimate frisbee she always, as teammate Justin Cotoia states, “puts her heart and soul into every sport and never gives up.”
Staff and participants have noticed Amanda’s skill and positive attitude. Chetan Mistry, Sport Convener, describes Amanda as “competitive with a lot of spirit.” Though she loves competition she always maintains a fair play attitude helping to create a positive experience for her team and opponents.
Amanda is the type of athlete that “makes it happen,” says Justin. She’s the one the team turns to in critical moments, and she always steps up to the plate providing leadership for her teams.
Amanda demonstrates intensity and enthusiasm whenever she plays. Most importantly, she makes sure that everyone on her team is staying positive and having a great time, which, as Justin notes, “is the true meaning of the intramural experience.”

Nathan Bottema
Nathan Bottema has been an avid intramural participant over his years at McMaster, playing in a variety of sports, and always with the same passion, excitement, and good-natured approach. An intense competitor, Nathan keeps things in perspective and is quick to shift gears and share a laugh with a fellow participant or staff member.
Nominated by his teammate and co-recipient of the AOY award, Kerry Howe, Nathan's place as Athlete of the Year was quickly confirmed by numerous staff members from across the many sports he participated in. Kerry highlighted Nathan's ability to play hard but keep things fun, as well as the friendships he's shared through his participation.
The intramural program serves a diverse population, but we often categorize our participants into two groups: Those that love to play and those that live to play. It's safe to say Nathan is one of the latter. Kerry was proud to note that, "while being a very diligent student, Nathan never seems to miss a game!" Playing on eight different teams in 2007/08, stretching from 7:00am hockey games to 11:00pm football showdowns, that's no small task.
Competing in softball, flag football, corec volleyball, floor hockey, ice hockey, team squash, and 5-on-5 basketball, Nathan and his teammates even managed to win the B1 Championship in 3-on-3 bastketball this past season.
Nominated by Kerry Howe
Kerry Howe
Kerry Howe's love of sport has been shared with many at McMaster over the last several years. His trademark grin would disappear for moments here and there (while chasing down a loose puck or rounding the bases), but would quickly reappear to let us all know just how much he loves 'playing the game.' An intense athlete, Kerry's competitive play was regularly balanced with a bigger-picture, fun-first attitude.
His teammate, Nathan Bottema, was most impressed with Kerry's well-rounded abilities: "Each and every game he brought a high level of intensity, sportsmanship and skill to the team," says Nathan. Like his teammate, Kerry's nomination as Athlete of the Year was confirmed by staff from several sport leagues.
Playing on eight different teams across a variety of sports this season - softball, flag football, corec volleyball, floor hockey, ice hockey, squash and basketball - Kerry and teammates left a lasting impression on participants and staff alike. Bringing home "the hardware" for 3-on-3 basketball in 2007/08, Kerry proved once again that winning and being a "good sport" goes hand-in-hand. No doubt he will wear his Champs and Athlete of the Year shirts proudly!
Nominated by Nathan Bottema
Vince Pugliese
Vince Pugliese has experienced Intramural Sports at McMaster from a variety of perspectives, and has left a lasting impression in each of his many roles. As a player, captain, champion and staff member, Vince participates with passion, intensity, and a strong desire for fair play.
Julia Bower, a teammate and past AOY-award winner, described Vince as a "passionate athlete that knows how to be a good sport." She described his enthusiasm, drive, and physical fitness as second only to his ability to get others involved and keep teammates on track, working together.
Vince participated on 7 different teams in 2007/08 in a variety of sports including ultimate frisbee, soccer, hockey, volleyball, and innertube water polo. A competitive and skilled athlete, Vince is described as consistently demonstrating that "competition can be a fun experience that challenges the spirit."
In a world where the win-win-win attitude is so prevalent, Vince's commitment to the 'less exciting details' - how the game is played, friendship, respect, fair play - is a welcome addition to the program and a model for all of us, on and off the playing field.
Vince was also recognized as Intramural Soccer Official of the Year for the 2007/08 season.
Nominated by Julia Bower
James Russell
James Russell has been a staple of the Intramural Sports program over his years at McMaster. James is described as a "a ludicrous athlete" who plays with sportsmanship in every action. "As a convener and occasional referee, I always receive the utmost respect from him, and he encourages his teammates to behave likewise," says Matt Edmonds, Soccer Convener.
A member of 12 teams, James' passion and almost-daily involvement left an impression on participants and staff in many sports, all year long. His raw energy and leadership with respect to fair play was felt on the soccer, softball, and football fields, in the gyms for volleyball and basketball, and in the pool for innertube water polo.
Matt Edmonds was most impressed by James' attitude towards opponents. He describes a day in March when James left a lasting impression: "Most recently, I witnessed him come to his [soccer] game late (his intramural basketball game went to triple overtime)... When he got on the court, he took a hard shot on net, watched the keeper make an excellent save, and responded by yelling across the court 'That was a great save!' as he chased down the rebound. You cannot ask for more from an intramural participant."
James is a great example of how fair play, respect, competitive desire, and skill can co-exist, and with great results: In addition to earning the respect of fellow participants and staff, he also managed to win his share of championships over his years.
Nominated by Matt Edmonds
Julia Bower
Julia's athleticism and spirit has left teammates, opponents, fans, and staff shaking their heads on many occasions: "Did you see that? Is she for real?" Whether laying out for a disc in Ultimate Frisbee, sharing congratulations with teammates for a play well done, or helping a fallen opponent back to their feet, Julia is nothing short of an exemplary athlete and person.
In his nomination, Kevin Turchyn spells it out: "If you've met her, you already understand. Just awesome! Julia embodies the spirit of McMaster Intramurals. The consummate team player, she is a great addition to any team."
Halyna Vreken had similarly glowing words in her nomination, highlighting Julia's dedication to fair-play and inclusive nature: "As a captain...the players she involves may not always be the best of athletes, but through the positive teamwork she pursues and passes on to her teammates, her teams go far! On and off the playing field, she lives and breathes fair play and fun!!"
Julia participated on 6 intramural teams this season, winning the championship in both Ultimate Frisbee and Softball.
Nominated by Halyna Vreken and Kevin Turchyn
Chris Knechtel
Playing on 11 teams during the 2006-2007 intramural season, even if you have yet to meet Chris, it's very likely that you have played along side him at one point or another! Playing 3-on-3 and Men's 5's Basketball, Corec 4's, 6's, and Men's Volleyball, Flag Football, Ultimate Frisbee, Innertube Water Polo, Floor Hockey, Softball, and taking part in the Pairs Volleyball Tournament, Chris leads the way with dedication and enthusiasm.
Chris' participation is highlighted by his passion, skill, and commitment to fair-play in his interaction with teammates, opponents and staff alike. In nominating Chris, Jamie-Lee Woods notes that "he's the one who takes a sub when no one else will and shakes the hands of the opposing teams and officials." It's also not unlikely to see Chris volunteering to take down volleyball nets and equipment post-game night.
Chris is "not afraid to miss class for intramurals" but maintains Dean's Honour List status and a part-time job.
"The best thing about Chris," Jamie-Lee notes, "is that he comes out everytime looking to make friends and just have FUN!!!"
Nominated by Jamie-Lee Woods
Craig Soeder
Craig played on 4 intramural teams this past season, and, as captain of the well-known and appreciated "Rabbits" hockey squad, has brought a positive force to our Ice, Street, and Floor Hockey leagues. He is recognized by fellow participants and staff as someone who "embodies the spirit of an intramural athlete."
When asked about Craig, Convener Jessica Chiu, smiling, said that "I never have to worry about Craig or his team. He goes out of his way to clean the bench after games, and always has things organized and ready to go."
Erin Workman nominated Craig, highlighting his passion, dedication, and desire to take the experience to the next level, not only making sure his teammates are aware of every game, but also arranging for matching hockey jerseys for eveyone.
Andrew Scott, a teammate of Craig's, describes him as "a big part of our success," and praises his unselfish nature: "He makes sure everyone gets equal playing time, even sacrificing his own." Craig will "drop what he's doing if there is a game to be played," writes Scott.

Jason Keung

He has participated in Indoor Soccer, Flag Football, Volleyball, Basketball, Water-polo, Ultimate Frisbee, and Softball. In his final year at McMaster, Jason has had his most active year, playing in five different sports.
Regardless of the score or the final result, Jason always maintains a positive attitude. He treats the officials and all of his opponents with respect and provides a constant reminder that McMaster Intramurals are all about having fun.
Jason remains a team player and is always looking for ways to get his teammates involved and help them improve. He does not show-off his talent but rather makes everyone around him better. His drive, sportsmanship, talent, and passion are a rare set of attributes that make him deserving of this award.

Kristen Little
Kristen is not only a superb athlete, but also a genuine team player. She participates in several intramural sports, all of which she approaches with great enthusiasm. Housemates have witnessed her extreme excitement, jumping and screaming around the house, before each and every volleyball, innertube waterpolo, soccer, and ultimate frisbee game.
Kristen has been captain on several of the teams she has played for, and is an incredible leader, maintaining a positive, friendly attitude towards competition. She makes sure that all players on her team recieve equal playing time and is always ready to play, rain or shine, with a smile on her face
Overall, Kristen has been the ideal Intramural athlete: One who thoroughly enjoys sport! She can always be heard cheering on her team and never fails to remind us all just what sport is about: HAVING FUN!!!

Andrew Scott
Andrew is an incredible athlete who lives for his next Intramural game. He is competitive, yet so encouraging to his teammates, and is always positive with opponents. Creating an atmosphere of inclusivity, his 'team-first' mentality is evident: He is the first to sit out if there are subs, as well as the first to recruit teammates for upcoming sports.
After captaining a Corec 3-Pitch team in the fall, Andrew went on to play innertube water polo, street hockey, floor hockey, ice hockey and even managed to get involved with our one-day 'Dodgeball Extravaganza'. His participation record is equally matched by his passion and dedication: Missing a game simply isn't an option for him!
Andrew's commitment to creating a positive sporting environment is appreciated by all, and we look forward to playing with him again next year!
Nominated by Daniel Brown & Danielle Hulan

Scott has been a member of six out of seven teams that have reached the semi-finals and is also very active academically. He is a third-year engineering student at McMaster and is also the representative for his engineering class. His contributions and skill are displayed to friends and teammates alike both on and off the field.
A second-time Athlete of the Year, Scott Fitzpatrick has once again played an outstanding number of Intramural sports, captained many teams and has, as always, been a great teammate. As a member of the famed 'Warm Spots' innertube water polo team, Scott battled admirably with his teammates to capture back-to-back championships.
Creating a positive environment for opposition and teammates alike, Scott continued to encourage friends and help first-time players enjoy and develop within sport - well done, Scott!

Halyna is a passionate Intramural athlete who lives for Intramurals. Captaining many teams, she draws people to sport through her energy and enthusiasm.
