The Department of Athletics and Recreation (a division of Student Affairs) provides students, staff, faculty, alumni and the greater community the opportunity to pursue athletic excellence and recreational activities. The mission of the department is to cultivate human potential and well-being through recreation and sport. The operating units of the department include athletics, recreation and sport medicine.

Job Summary
McMaster University's Department of Athletics and Recreation is seeking a part-time photographer to join our team. Reporting to the Communications & Media Specialist and/or the Sports Information Officer, the successful candidate will provide support in the planning and execution of photo content for McMaster University’s Athletics & Recreation programs. The ideal candidate will be responsible for capturing photos to promote our varsity sports teams and recreation programs. The successful candidate will assist in the planning and execution of photo shoots, live event coverage, headshots, and other digital media content for McMaster University's Department of Athletics & Recreation and its programs.

  • Capture high-quality photographs of McMaster University varsity sports events, games, and competitions, including live-action, headshots, promotional and team photos.
  • Produce engaging visual content that showcases recreation programs and classes, facilities, and events.
  • Plan and execute photography shoots, including identifying locations, setting up equipment, and coordinating/directing subjects and clients.
  • Edit and enhance photos (as needed) using industry-standard software (Adobe Creative Suite - Lightroom, Photoshop, etc.) to ensure they meet the highest quality standards.
  • Organize and maintain all photography assets on Dropbox to ensure easy access for internal and external stakeholders.
  • Collaborate with other members of the communications and marketing team to support the university's brand and messaging.
  • Maintain all photography equipment and ensure that it is in good working order.
  • Assist in developing photography strategies and campaigns that align with the department's goals and objectives.
  • Stay up-to-date with the latest photography trends and techniques to ensure content remains fresh and relevant.
  • Assist in managing department social media accounts for both @macrecreation and @mcmastersports on multiple platforms

Requirements

  • At least 6 months of photography experience with a focus on sports, physical activity, events, and portraits.
  • Demonstrated proficiency with professional photography equipment, including DSLR/Mirrorless cameras, zoom lenses, studio lighting, and editing software.
  • Strong knowledge of Adobe Creative Suite, including Photoshop and Lightroom.
  • Understanding of artificial lighting
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to build relationships with a diverse range of stakeholders.
  • A portfolio of work that demonstrates your ability to capture high-quality photographs in a variety of settings and situations, including capturing fast moving action in low-light, indoors, and at night.
  • Experience shooting sports at a high school, collegiate or professional level.
  • Ability to work primarily evenings and weekends.

Assets

  • Undergraduate student currently enrolled in, or recently graduated from, a digital media, communications, media arts or creative marketing program at a university or college.
  • Experience directing subjects during shoots to achieve desired outcomes
  • Experience with photography lighting setups
  • In-depth understanding of mirrorless cameras and experience with Sony a7iii or equivalent models.
  • Experience shooting sports both indoors and outdoors, and in low-light settings

  • Photography equipment will be provided as needed during shifts by the Department of Athletics & Recreation. Successful candidates will be permitted to use their own equipment if desired.
  • Approximately 10 hours per week.
  • Must be available to work on campus in the David Braley Athletic Centre or surrounding athletic complex.
  • Option for some travel with varsity teams to cover events.
