The Competitive Edge

A next-level athletic performance and leadership camp, The Competitive Edge is a tremendous opportunity and experience for any young athlete looking to take their enjoyment and sport performance to the next level. The Competitive Edge is quite literally a 'game changer' of a camp that packs in fun, education, team and leadership development into one high-energy week at a time.

The camp is designed to promote the foundations of strength and conditioning and features themed challenges including Amazing Race, Survivor Challenge, X-treme Obstacle Course and Family Feud, and shares cutting-edge lessons in strength, conditioning, nutrition, team and leadership development…and all while promoting FUN as the catalyst for athletic development! All campers receive a post-camp evaluation including recommendations for future development. Athletes will acquire a variety of skills and leave camp with an understanding of what it means to train successfully.

Athletes at The Competitive Edge have a ton of fun, but there's no doubt they work hard and get sweaty all week long. Athletes registering for The Competitive Edge should have a diverse sport background and a desire to learn the FUNdamentals of training to take their sport performance to the next level.

A Note on Friend Pairing Requests

We'll work to meet your friend requests whenever possible, but the very intentional nature of The Competitive Edge, centred around teamwork and leadership development, is built around four evenly matched teams of campers. These teams are comprised of teammates of complementary abilities to take on the camp's challenges. All this means that friend pairing requests often lose out to the overall camp design. So don't be surprised if you are not paired with your requested friend, but don't worry: As a camp that inspires, requires and teaches teamwork, you'll make friends quickly enough. And that skill, making friends, being a great teammate? It's just another part of The Competitive Edge.

Training & Recovery at The Competitive Edge

Training at The Competitive Edge resembles that of high performance athletes, tailored to the age and development of each athlete. Training includes: 

  • Dynamic Warm-ups / Pro-active Cool Downs
  • Building Blocks of Sport Nutrition
  • Relative Strength Training (Body Weight Strength Training)
  • Torso Stability and Endurance
  • Movement Skills (Lateral and Jumping Mechanics)
  • Speed Mechanics (Acceleration and Deceleration)
  • ABC's (Agility, Balance and Coordination)
  • Energy System Development
  • Teamwork Essentials
  • Leadership Development
  • Debriefing (Evaluation of performance from various activities)
  • Recovery principles and in-pool sessions

Swimming at The Competitive Edge

Recovery is a key component of any athletes training program, and in-pool time presents a great opportunity to apply the principles of hydrotherapy and recovery. The Competitive Edge schedule includes swimming with a focus on recovery, and, of course, having fun.

  • Junior Sessions (ages 10-12) include daily recreational swims in our Olympic Pool
  • Senior Session (ages 13-15) includes one swim session for the week, focused on training and recovery principles

Additional Camp Services

Options available during registration include:

  • Extended Care from 7:30am-5:30pm each day
  • Busing from Ancaster, Burlington, Carlisle, Dundas,Hamilton Mountain, Oakville, Stoney Creek and Waterdown
  • Lunch served daily, delicious and nutritious!

The tentative schedule offered below outlines a typical day at camp:

Camp Checklist

  • Water Bottle
  • Bagged Lunch (No Refrigeration Available)
  • Running Shoes and Socks
  • Gym Shorts and T-Shirt (Extra Shirts Recommended)

First Day Check-In

Athletes are to meet in the East Auxiliary Gym in the Ivor Wynne Centre. Your athlete will be assigned to a counsellor group, where they are to meet every morning for attendance and to prepare for the day.

Sample Weekly Outline:

Monday: Dynamic Warm-ups, Scavenger Hunt, Team Building Game, Nutrition Education

Tuesday: Speed Mechanics, ESD (Energy System Development), Climbing Wall, Long Term Athlete Development

Wednesday: Movement Skills, Relative Strength Training, Flexibility Training, Obstacle Course, Minute to Win It

Thursday: Amazing Race, ABC’s, High/Low Ropes, Applying Sport Nutrition

Friday: Torso Endurance, ESD Games, Cooldowns, Survivor Final Challenge
