This job consists of two roles. Personal Trainer and Support Staff. Personal Trainers strive to meet clients’ varied needs, offering proactive, flexible, client-centred programming, and providing clients with up-to-date, evidence-based knowledge that will encourage each client to reach their goals. As Support Staff, trainers represent the Pulse Fitness Centre by creating a positive space and an inviting environment. They are responsible for greeting and helping members, as well as monitoring the gym to maintain a safe environment.

Salary:

Floor Shifts: $17/hour and Personal Training Sessions: Varies

Personal Training

  • Gain own clients for personal training sessions
  • Design and teach individualized training programs
  • Emphasize proper technique and safe practices

Job duties

  • Greeting members and answering questions about the Pulse services and offerings
  • Checking memberships and ensuring members are adhering to Pulse dress code, rules, and gym etiquette
  • Distributing equipment and checking that all pieces are returned/accounted for
  • Performing daily duties on shift to maintain the facilities
  • Participate in social media promotion of McMaster recreation's services and philosophy
  • Attending monthly staff meeting/trainings

Supervise and monitor the gym

  • Assist members with proper exercise techniques and answer fitness-related questions
  • Enforce Pulse rules and regulations, encourage proper gym etiquette
  • Emphasize proper technique and safe practices
  • Resolve conflicts professionally, and promptly document and report any incidents to supervisors
  • Maintain a clean and organized facility at all times
  • Perform equipment checks, cleaning, maintenance, and report issues with the equipment

Self Development

  • Strive to improve fitness knowledge by attending mandatory monthly meetings
  • Obtain Continuing Education Credits
  • Keep current with fitness trends and research

Promote Pulse and recreation programs and services

  • Personal Training
  • Group Fitness Classes
  • Instructional Programs
  • Upcoming Events
  • Clubs, etc.

Working to provide a safe and welcoming fitness centre for students, faculty, and staff is of the utmost importance.

Candidates should possess:

  • enthusiasm towards the field of health and fitness
  • excellent communication skills and value customer service
  • strong working knowledge of gym equipment, proper technique and form

Candidates must be:

  • comfortable interacting with members and completing floor shift duties for the entirety of their shift
  • available to work a minimum of 10 hours/week
  • available to work weekend and evening shifts

Certifications (not required to apply, but required to start working in September 2023 if hired):

  • Nationally Recognized Personal Training Certification (e.g., canfitpro, CSEP, CPTN, NSCA, etc.)
  • Standard First Aid & CPR/AED Level C
