Camp Director, Sport Fitness School - APPLICATIONS CLOSED

The Department of Athletics & Recreation provides service to students, employees, alumni, and the greater community with aim to inspire healthy, active lifestyles for all.  The Sport Fitness School (SFS) Director supervises the entire camp program and ensures that all university and department policies are adhered to, that risk management is given thoughtful consideration in every activity, and that we are actively creating staff, camp and sport culture that contribute to our goal of building a healthy and inclusive community.

Winter 2023, Spring/Summer 2024

Scheduled Hours:

Nov–Apr 5-15 hrs/week(approx); May–June 35 hrs/week; July–Aug 40 hrs/week

Salary:

$21.00/hour +

General Administration & Activity Planning
  • Meet regularly with Camps Coordinator during camp planning/execution
  • Work with Camps Coordinator to identify higher-risk camp activities, reviewing and improving upon existing risk management plans
  • Consult with department staff in related camp offerings to review activity plans (pediatric health and fitness, outdoor recreation, sport-specific, etc.)
  • Ensure SFS is complying to all OCA standards
Camp Advertising/Promotion/Website
  • Represent all McMaster Athletics & Recreation Camps at community camp fairs
  • Review website and ensure all relevant information is shared/updated
Staffing: Hiring, Training, Evaluating
  • Assist in advertising for all camp job opportunities
  • Work with Camps Coordinator to interview and hire SFS Leadership Team (LT 10-14 positions)
  • Review applications of SFS staff applicants
  • Plan and implement all aspects of hiring both returning and new staff members (70-100 positions)
  • Ensure all staff member have completed appropriate training and administrative details: First-aid Training, Vulnerable Sector Screenings, EOHSS Training Payroll, Work Study, etc.
  • Lead SFS Leadership Team (LT) in defining areas of focus, initiatives, etc., while setting and monitoring progress of season-specific camp and individual goals
  • Ensure staff manual is developed outlining emergency procedures, first aid protocol, behaviour management, schedules, staff responsibilities, etc.
  • Work with Camps Coordinator and other Camp Directors to present Camp-Wide staff training
  • Lead SFS LT in planning and implementation of SFS Staff Training
  • Formally evaluate all SFS staff members
Lesson Planning: Review & Guidance to Staff
  • Work with all staff to ensure lesson plans for activities are in line with camp vision, and consider camper and staff safety
Registration
  • Work with the Camps Coordinator to update the SFS registration database, ensuring sport numbers, etc. reflect updated plans for new camp season
Parent/Guardian Information
  • Update Parent/Guardian Guide to be sent to registered campers
  • Plan and implement Parent/Guardian and Camper SFS Orientation Night
  • Communicate with Camp Families & Stakeholders as necessary via phone, email, and in-person
Financial
  • Monitor SFS budget
  • Manage SFS payroll submissions
  • Track and report on expenses
Medical/First Aid
  • Ensure that all SFS staff members are trained in Standard First Aid & CPR-C
  • Work with SFS and Camps Health & Safety Coordinator to ensure proper review of all medical information forms and that a fully stocked first aid kit is available at each sport location
Equipment/Supplies
  • Ensure all SFS equipment is inventoried
  • Ensure all SFS equipment is in working-order prior to camp starting
  • Ensure all required supplies and equipment are purchased
  • Experienced and passionate with respect to creating a safe, inclusive, enjoyable, and memorable children's sport experience
  • Respected member of the SFS staff in previous seasons, and thorough understanding of SFS-specific operations are an asset
  • Proven ability in leadership of co-workers, staff and/or peer groups
  • Ability to critically reflect on sport culture and camp traditions, ensuring their service of greater departmental and camp-specific goals
  • Standard First Aid/CPR-C certification & Vulnerable Sector Screening
