Camps Program Assistant - APPLICATIONS CLOSED

The Department of Athletics and Recreation provides service to students, employees, alumni, and the greater community with aim to inspire healthy, active lifestyles for all. The Sport Fitness School (SFS) Leadership Team is responsible for the entire SFS program and ensures that all university and department policies are adhered to, that risk management is given thoughtful consideration in every activity, and that we are actively creating staff, camp and sport culture that contribute to our goal of building a healthy and inclusive community through sport.

Spring & Summer 2024

Scheduled Hours:

May-June 10-30hrs/week; late June-August 35-44 hrs/week (approx.)

Salary:

$19.50/hour

General Administration & Activity Planning

  • Meet regularly with Camps Coordinator during camp planning/execution.
  • Work with Camps Coordinator to identify higher-risk camp activities, reviewing and improving upon existing risk management plans.
  • Ensure Marauder Sport Camps are adhering to OCA Standards.
  • Consult with department staff in related camp offerings to review activity plan (pediatric health and fitness, outdoor recreation, sport-specific, etc.)

Camp Operations

  • Ensure camp staff are abiding by all policies and procedures.
  • Report any accidents or incidents to the Camps Coordinator promptly.
  • Assist in collecting morning attendance from Marauder Sport Camps (MSC) in session and deliver to Business Office. Follow-up may be required.
  • Assist Camps Coordinator in weekly printing and organizing of camp session reports.
  • Monitor daily activities at MSC in operation, assisting in problem solving, risk management, daily operations, and communications with Camps Coordinator.
  • Participate and travel with camps groups going on field trips, transportation will be provided.

Camp Advertising / Promotion / Website

  • Represent all McMaster Athletics & Recreation Camps at community camp fairs.
  • Review website and ensure all relevant information is shared / updated.
  • Work with Camps Digital Media Assistant to develop and create a plan for Marauder Sport Camp social media presence throughout the camp season and beyond.
  • Maintain a McMaster Camps Social Media presence leading up to and during camp season.
  • Assist Marketing & Promotions team with tasks such as delivering and posting promotional materials.

Staffing: Hiring, Training & Evaluating

  • Work with Camps Coordinator and Varsity Coaches to interview and hire Marauder Sport Camp Student-Leaders
  • Collaborate with each camp's leaders to plan and implement hiring of both returning and new staff members.
  • Ensure all staff members have completed appropriate training and administrative details in a timely fashion: First aid training and administrative details in a timely fashion: First aid training, Vulnerable Sector Screenings, payroll, McWork, etc.
  • Support Marauder Sport Camp leaders in defining areas of focus, initiatives, etc. while setting and monitoring progress of season-specific camp and individual goals.
  • Ensure staff manual is developed outlining emergency procedures, first aid protocol, behaviour management, schedules, staff responsibilities, etc.
  • Support Camps leaders in planning and implementation of staff training.
  • Collaborate with each camp's leaders to evaluate and provide feedback to all staff members.

Parent/Guardian Information

  • Assist with planning and implementing the Camps Orientation Night.

Medical / First Aid

  • Ensure that all Camp staff are training in Standard First Aid
  • Work with Camp Health & Safety Coordinator to ensure proper review of all medical information forms and that a fully stocked first aid kit is available at each sport location.
  • Administer red bracelets to campers with flagged medical files.

Additional Duties

  • Assist Camps Coordinator in correspondence with organizations involved in our Scholarship Program
  • Following the camp season, the Camps Program Assistant may be responsible for the distribution and data compilation of a camper feedback survey.
  • Experienced and passionate with respect to creating a safe, inclusive, enjoyable, and memorable children's sport experience.
  • Respected member of McMaster Athletics & Recreation camp staff in previous seasons, and thorough understanding of camp-specific operations is an asset.
  • Proven ability in leadership of co-workers, staff and/or peer groups.
  • Ability to critically reflect on sport culture and camp traditions, ensuring their service of greater departmental and camp-specific goals.
  • Standard First Aid/CPR-C certification prior to work start.
  • Cleared Vulnerable Sector Scan obtained within the current camp year prior to work start.
